URUBAMBA RIVER

The Urubamba river rises in the Andes of southern Peru to the south-east of Cuzco in the place call La Raya, the upper part of the Urubamba, it's called the Vilcanota Wicamayu (Sacred River), flows past the towns of Sicuani, Urcos. Between Písac and Ollantaytambo, it is also called the Vilcanota. In the lower part it's called Alto Urubamba near Machu Pichu, Santa Teresa, Quillbamba and Echarate. It flows north-west for about 724 kilometers to its junction with the Apurímac river, where it forms the Ucayali and then the Amazon river. The volume and rocky underground provide ideal conditions for recreational and adventure activities on the Urubamba River. The most popular of which is white water rafting. URUBAMBA RAFTING 1 DAY

This section is perfect for one day tours, with nice class II, III and III+ rapids. Excellent scenic riverside big eucalyptus trees, beautiful flowers, profusion of cactus and Inca ruins adorn this whitewater trip. This white water rafting season is all year long and from early December to late March the river is Class IV.

itinerary

UrubambaAt 8 am passengers will be collected from their hotels, after one hour and 30 minute drive through green valleys, snow capped mountains and small Andean villages we arrive to the beginning of the trip, before we jump into the water the guides will give a safety talk about the rafting, there after will provide the crew with the proper equipment.

Before we start running the rapids, we will practice the commands so we can be ready when action will come. Slowly going down river we will be between rocks, waves and class II, III rapids. After challenge the Urubamba river, we will have a nice lunch and then we go back to Cusco.

What to bring

Shorts (obligatory in order, to wear over teh wet suit), bathing costume, sandals, sun Block, insect repellent and water.

URUBAMBA RAFTING 2 DAYS

We have to consider two options for this tour. During the raining season this section become one of the best tours for white water rafting in the Urubamba river, the rapids goes from level II to IV with constant waves and holes making of this tour unforgattable. During the dry season this section is good for very beginners, but still has a little touch of adventure. We definitely recommend do this this during the raining season from mid of December to March.

  • Departure: 8 am.
  • Return: 4 pm.
  • Trip grading: II to III and IV and V during raining season (end of December to March)
  • Time per day in the river: two to five hours approx.
  • Season: All year, but we recommend during mid December to March

Itinerary

DAY 1 CUSCO-CHECACUPE-CHUQUICAHUANA

Departure at 8 am. passengers will be collected from their hotels. We drive for about 1 hour and 45 minutes until we arrive to a beautiful Andean town called Checacupe which will be the beginning of our trip. We are going to have a safety briefing about commands and safety instructions followed by practice in the river. The first hour in the river is calm, with nice rapids level II ideal to practice the commands and safety instructions. After a good lunch, the river becomes a little more agressive, we will find class II and III rapids until we arrive to our first camp.

DAY 2 CHUQUICAHUANA-QUIQUIJANA-CUSCO

For most of our clients this day is the best. After running the river for one hour with class II and III rapids, we will be in the middle of the canyon call Chuiquicahuana, which is consider the most difficult and excited section from our trip. Long rapids with nice waves and holes that goes form level II to IV rapids are part of this adventure. Two hours after this nice section we enter into another canyon, this is mostly class II and III rapids with nice standing waves but still good fun, there after we arrive to the end of the trip where we will have a nice lunch. Travel time to Cusco is 1 hour.

URUBAMBA RAIN FOREST RAFTING

Having this program people will have the chance to combine trips that finish or begins at the Inca Trail, Salkantay, Inca Jungle and one day tour to Machu Picchu. This section is the ultimate rafting to the Urubamba River. This section is runnable from Santa Teresa, Chaullay, Maranura, Quillbamba and Echarate located in the rainforest at 2:30 minutes from Machu Picchu. In this section, we can find rapids from class II to Class IV, also we have section with nice and friendly rapids ideal for family trips or school groups. This section is very commercial for the kind of rapids it has, it doesn't have a lot of rocks, it mostly water with nice waves and calm water sections in between.

Here the weather is warm, with nice jungle atmosphere papaya, banana, variety of trees and wild life is a unique trip that you will never forget.

URUBAMABA RAINFOREST RAFTING - 1DAY

Passengers will be collected from Cusco, Santa Teresa or Hydroelectric we can also organize the train from Cusco, Ollantaytambo or Aguas Calientes to Hydroelectric.

We are going to have a safety briefing followed by practice in the river. In the morning we will be running rapids Class II, III and IV, with a lot of nice waves and holes. We stop for lunch between 12:00 and 12: 30, after still there will be class II, III and IV rapids to run until we arrive to Chaullay, where will be the end of the trip. Travel time from Santa Maria to Cusco 4 hours 30 min

We are going to have a safety briefing followed by practice in the river. In the morning we will be running rapids Class II, III and IV, there will be nice rapids with beautiful scenery.

After a good lunch, we will still be running class II, III and IV. We will be finishing the rafting at 4 pm. And resting at Santa Maria.

DAY 2 SANTA TERESA-SANTA MARIA-QUILLABAMBA

After breakfast we will star our second day. There will be rapids class II, III and IV. This section has a lot of water nice waves and holes, scenery is spectacular, after each rapid we have a calm water making the river safe to run. We stop in Chaullay or Maranura to have lunch and after we continue until Quillabamba where will be the end of the trip. Travel Time from Quillabamba to Cusco 5 hours.

We are going to have a safety briefing followed by practice about the rafting. In the morning we will be running rapids Class II, III and IV. We stop for lunch between 12:00 and 12: 30 there after we will still be running class II, III and IV. We will be finishing the rafting at 4 pm., and resting at Santa Maria.

DAY 2 SANTA TERESA-SANTA-MARIA-QUILLABAMBA

After a good breakfast we will star running the river, there will be rapids class II, III and IV. This section has a lot of water, nice waves and holes, scenery it’s spectacular, after each rapid we have a calm water making the river safe to run. We stop at Chaullay or Maranura to have lunch, after Lunch we continue until Quillabamba where we will camp.

DAY 3 QUILLABAMBA-ECHARATE

Our last day, practically this section is the most colorful, mother nature is impressive. The rapids are not that very difficult we will have rapids class II, III and III +, ending in Echarate. After we going back to Cusco. Travel Time from Echarate to Cusco 6 Hours.
