Tambopata – Candamo is a natural reserve in the Peruvian Amazon basin with an enormous biodiversity, which represent native flora and fauna. This river flows from the eastern slope of the Andes from the Puno region to the capital city of Puerto Maldonado located in the Amazon Jungle.
We as well as many of our visitors consider this Tambopata rafting trip as one of the best tours in South America to explore nature and enjoy adventure.
Fauna: River giant otter, macaws, tapirs, a variety of monkeys and birds, and if we’re lucky, jaguars and anacondas!
Climate: Warm and humed.

This trip usually starts in Puno, but we can organize a transfer if you are in Lima or any other place in Peru. This adventure begins at 8 am. where we depart from Junliaca city. This ride will take us high into the Andes (15,700 feet, 4785 m), passing llama herds, glaciers and spectacular mountain ranges. We begin to descend through small Pre-Inca sites Cuyo-Cuyo to the Amazon cloud forest. From here we drop deeper into the jungle and finally to San Juan de Loro-Putina Punku where the rafting trip will begin. We organize the expedition, pack all the gear on the rafts and hold a briefing about commands and safety instructions, followed by practice in the river. Only once the passengers have a good working knowledge of the commands and of safety we start descending the river. Today is easy with nice small rapids until the first camp.
The Tambopata river is different as we enter more into the Jungle. In the beginning the river is narrow with many technical rapids level II and III and III+. As we descend the Tambopata river changes with more tributaries that will be increasing the volume of the Tambopata creating class IV rapids with nice waves and holes. There will be plenty of time to take pictures of the rapids and the spectacular scenery around us. After all these exciting sections of rapids the Tambopata River relaxes floating silently through the Amazon jungle. This is a good opportunity to observe the variety of life surround us. We paddle quietly to be able to spot capibaras, monkeys, macaws, tapirs, caymans, giant otters, countless species of birds, butterflies and a variety of vegetation. Usually it is difficult to see jaguars and anacondas, but maybe we are be lucky this time and observe these two great rain forest animals. One of the days on the trip we go on a trek into the Amazon Jungle to explore the beautiful surroundings. On most of the trips our guides will catch fish in the Tambopata River and prepare a delicious dinner with them.
After some exciting days on this Tambopata rafting tour, the river shrinks towards arriving to the last camp. Our camp will be near a macaw clay lick so we can see this natural spectacle the next day.
Today we wake up very early to see the extraordinary spectacle of hundreds of macaws, parrots and parakeets feasting on the minerals contained in the cliff wall. Thereafter, our motor boat will transfer us to Puerto Maldonado where we can enjoy the luxury of a refreshing shower, a comfortable bed, fresh food and cold beer and with that celebrate an amazing trip.
After breakfast we take the flight to Cusco or Lima depending on your itinerary.
