THE INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU

In an effort to preserve and protect the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the Peruvian government authorities put limit to the number of people who visit the Trail. In March 2004, no more than 500 people (including support staff) per day are allowed on the Inca Trail.

River Explorers is happy to work within the framework of these regulations in order to protect the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.

The rules and regulations controlling the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are continually changing and it is important to be aware of the issues detailed in this document before embarking on your adventure to Peru.

Current Inca Trail Regulations

As described above, no more than 500 people per day are allowed to hike the Inca Trail. This number includes all support staff (ie. porters, cooks and guides) and is very strictly controlled. Once this limit of 500 people is reached, the Trail is completely closed off for the day and no further bookings can be made. Reservations are not held on the Trail and all permits to hike must be bought as far as possible in advance with complete and correct personal information, and no modifications can be made. Any attempts at modifications result in a loss of the permit and any money paid.

Inca Trail trekking booking policies

This passport number and name will be used to identify yourself as you enter the checkpoint at the start of the trail and during the hike. Thank you for your understanding

Salkantay regulations

The price 409 $ for the Salkantay trek does not included the entrance fees to Salkantay (141 soles).  In 2008 the INC (National Institute of Culture) introduced a 141 Peruvian soles (42 $) entrance fees to Salkantay. We felt that this was an excessive charge, as the government doesn’t offer any service or infrastructure. After many strikes and protest the INC  currently is not charging this fee, and appears that in some days the INC charge it and in some other days they don´t. In charging people who then have a lucky day we decided do not Include this fee in the price, but you must be prepared to pay the fees if the INC requests it on route. We apologize for this inconvenient.

SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS

Our Trip prices are based on Double Occupancy Hotel Rooms, Tents and Lodges. If you are travelling alone and wish to share, we will assign a same-sex roommate if one is available. If there is no-one available to share with you then the Single Supplement applies.
